Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Myanmar politician and pro-democracy activist who led the National League for Democracy and served as state counsellor from 2016 to 2021.

Aung San: A Burmese independence leader and military officer who helped negotiate Burma’s path to independence from Britain. Her father’s independence struggle shaped the political legacy she inherited.
National League for Democracy: A Myanmar political party founded in 1988 to campaign for democracy and civilian government. Suu Kyi led the party that won the 2015 election and formed the civilian government.
Rohingya genocide: The mass persecution and forced displacement of Rohingya people from Myanmar, especially during the military campaign beginning in 2017. Her government’s response to the crisis sharply damaged her international reputation.
