Axis powers

The wartime coalition led by Germany, Italy, and Japan against the Allies during the Second World War. Its members coordinated through treaties and military cooperation but never formed a unified command.

Pact of Steel: A 1939 treaty that formalized the political and military alliance between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. It turned the Rome–Berlin partnership into a formal alliance before the war began.
Coalition warfare: Military operations conducted by armed forces from multiple states acting toward shared objectives. The Axis operated as a wartime coalition, but its forces coordinated unevenly.
Adolf Hitler: The Nazi dictator who ruled Germany from 1933 until his death in 1945. His expansionist policy and leadership made Germany the coalition’s driving force.
Allies of World War II: The international coalition that fought the Axis powers during the Second World War. The Allies were the opposing coalition against which the Axis defined its war.
Tripartite Pact: A 1940 agreement among Germany, Italy, and Japan that established the Axis partnership. It gave the coalition its defining three-power agreement.
German–Soviet nonaggression pact: A 1939 agreement in which Germany and the Soviet Union pledged not to fight each other and secretly divided spheres of influence. The pact temporarily secured Germany’s eastern flank before the Axis invaded the Soviet Union.
Benito Mussolini: The Fascist dictator who ruled Italy from 1922 until 1943. He made Italy Germany’s principal European partner and later entered the war.
Allied powers: The principal states that led the Allied coalition, especially the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and United States. Their changing partnership contrasts with the Axis powers’ less integrated alliance.
Anti-Comintern Pact: A 1936 agreement between Germany and Japan opposing the Communist International, later joined by Italy. Its ideological alignment preceded the coalition’s formal military commitments.
Operation Barbarossa: Germany’s 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, the largest military campaign of the Second World War. The invasion drew Axis partners into Germany’s eastern war, with differing levels of participation.
