Bacterial taxonomy

Bacterial taxonomy is the science of classifying, naming, and identifying bacteria. Modern classifications combine evolutionary relationships inferred from genetic evidence with observable and biochemical characteristics.

16S ribosomal RNA: A ribosomal RNA molecule whose conserved and variable regions help compare evolutionary relationships among bacteria and archaea. Its sequence became a foundational marker for comparing bacterial lineages.
Bacterial species: A named group of bacterial strains recognized as a distinct taxonomic unit under an adopted species concept. Species are the central units that bacterial taxonomy names and distinguishes.
