Bahariya Oasis

Bahariya Oasis is a depression in Egypt’s Western Desert containing settlements, cultivated land, and natural springs. Its archaeological record includes the Valley of the Golden Mummies and remains from ancient Egyptian periods.

Valley of the Golden Mummies: A large Greco-Roman-period cemetery near Bawiti, where excavations uncovered hundreds of mummies, many with gilded coverings. This cemetery is Bahariya’s best-known archaeological discovery and reveals local burial practices under Roman rule.
Egyptian Western Desert: The arid region west of the Nile Valley, extending across much of Egypt toward Libya. Bahariya is one of the inhabited depressions within this broader desert region.
Depression (geography): A landform lower than the surrounding terrain, created by geological or erosional processes. Bahariya’s basin-like landform distinguishes it from nearby desert plateaus.
Egyptian agriculture: The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock in Egypt, concentrated around irrigated land and the Nile. Bahariya adds date and other oasis crops to agriculture beyond the Nile Valley.
Egyptology: The study of ancient Egypt’s history, language, culture, and material remains. Bahariya’s tombs and temples contribute evidence from Egypt’s western frontier.
Temple of Alexander the Great at Bahariya: A temple near Bawiti associated with Alexander the Great and the Egyptian god Amun. Its reliefs provide rare evidence of Alexander’s presence and royal image in Egypt’s western oasis.
Oasis: A fertile area in an arid region where accessible water supports vegetation and human settlement. Bahariya’s springs and groundwater make its cultivated settlements possible.
Eocene: A geological epoch lasting from about 56 to 34 million years ago. Bahariya’s exposed rocks include Eocene deposits that record an ancient marine environment.
Date cultivation: The growing and harvesting of dates from cultivated date palms. Date production remains a defining agricultural activity in Bahariya.
Mummy: A human or animal body preserved after death through natural or deliberate processes. The Valley of the Golden Mummies brought Bahariya’s preserved dead to international attention.
