Baiyue

Baiyue was an ancient Chinese collective name for diverse peoples living south of the Yangtze River. It grouped communities with distinct languages, customs, and political histories rather than a single unified people.

Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea. Its lower reaches formed a major geographic reference for describing lands associated with Baiyue.
Huaxia: An ancient cultural and political identity associated with the predecessors of the Han Chinese. Ancient texts often positioned Huaxia identity against peoples categorized as Baiyue.
Minyue: An ancient state and people in the coastal region of present-day Fujian. Minyue is one of the clearest named political communities associated with Yue classifications.
Qin dynasty: China's first imperial dynasty, which ruled from 221 to 206 BCE. Qin campaigns extended imperial rule into southern territories associated with Baiyue.
Wuyue: An ancient state in the lower Yangtze region, centered in what is now Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Wuyue shows how named states occupied regions later described through the broader Baiyue label.
Han Chinese: An East Asian ethnic group whose identity developed over centuries of political and cultural change. Baiyue classifications were formed in relation to expanding states associated with Han Chinese history.
Nanyue: A kingdom founded in 204 BCE in parts of present-day southern China and northern Vietnam. Nanyue illustrates the formation of a southern kingdom from territories and populations linked with Baiyue.
Han dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 206 BCE to 220 CE, with an interlude from 9 to 23 CE. Han expansion and administration changed the political setting in which Baiyue groups were described.
Yue people: An ancient population associated with the lower Yangtze and southeastern coast of China. The name Yue is a prominent component of the broader category Baiyue.
