Banditry

Banditry is organized robbery or violence committed by armed groups, especially where state authority is weak or absent. It can range from local raiding to sustained insurgent activity.

Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which smaller forces use raids, ambushes, and mobility against stronger opponents. Bandit groups may adopt guerrilla tactics when robbery expands into armed resistance.
Social bandit: A bandit portrayed by local communities as a defender against unjust authorities or elites. This idealized figure is one enduring way communities interpret banditry.
Eric Hobsbawm: A British Marxist historian whose work covered social history, nationalism, and modern political movements. His influential account made the social bandit a framework for studying rural outlawry.
Piracy: Robbery or violent seizure carried out at sea, typically against ships or coastal settlements. Piracy shares predatory violence with banditry but operates primarily in maritime settings.
Protection racket: A scheme in which threats of harm are used to extract recurring payments for supposed protection. Bandits can turn episodic robbery into regular income by taxing communities under threat.
Haiduk: An outlaw or armed irregular found historically in parts of southeastern Europe under Ottoman rule. Haiduks show how banditry could merge with resistance to imperial authority.
Robin Hood: A legendary English outlaw portrayed in ballads and later works as a defender of the poor. His stories exemplify the popular image of the socially just bandit.
Insurgency: An organized armed movement seeking to weaken or overthrow an established government. Insurgents pursue political change, while bandits may focus chiefly on predation.
Contraband: Goods whose possession or trade is prohibited or restricted by law. Smuggling networks can supply bandit groups and provide markets for stolen goods.
Cossacks: Communities of East European frontier warriors, some of which formed military hosts and challenged state authority. Frontier conditions sometimes blurred the boundary between raiding, military service, and banditry.
