Barbary corsairs

Barbary corsairs were North African privateers and raiders who operated chiefly from the ports of Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and Salé. From the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, they attacked ships and coastal settlements and took captives for ransom or enslavement.

Privateering: State-authorized private individuals attack enemy shipping during wartime under a letter of marque. Corsairs often held commissions from North African rulers, though their activity also extended beyond formal wartime privateering.
Ottoman Empire: A multiethnic empire centered in Anatolia that lasted from the late thirteenth century to 1922. Ottoman power shaped the political setting in which major North African corsair ports developed.
Oruç Reis: A sixteenth-century Ottoman corsair who helped establish an autonomous Muslim polity in Algiers. His campaigns helped create the North African base from which his brother Hayreddin rose to power.
Barbary Wars: Two early nineteenth-century conflicts between the United States and North African states over shipping, tribute, and piracy. The wars show how the United States used naval force to challenge corsair threats.
