Basque Country

The Basque Country is a cultural region spanning parts of northern Spain and southwestern France, home to the Basque people and the Basque language, Euskara.

Basque people: An ethnic group indigenous to the western Pyrenees, with communities in Spain and France. Shared identity connects the region’s communities across the French-Spanish border.
Kingdom of Navarre: A medieval kingdom centered on the western Pyrenees, later divided between France and Spain. Its changing borders helped shape political divisions across Basque lands.
Basque Government: The executive institution governing the Spanish Basque autonomous community. It administers regional responsibilities under Spain’s autonomy framework.
Spain: A sovereign country occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula. The southern Basque territories belong to Spain, where some have autonomous institutions.
Basque language: Euskara, a language isolate spoken chiefly in the western Pyrenees. Euskara is a defining cultural marker, spoken on both sides of the border.
Fueros: Regional laws and privileges historically recognized by Spanish monarchs in parts of the Basque territories. Fueros underpinned distinctive local self-government before their nineteenth-century curtailment.
Basque Parliament: The elected legislature of Spain’s Basque autonomous community. It makes laws for the region’s three constituent provinces.
France: A sovereign country in western Europe, including the northern Basque territories. The French side has no Basque autonomous community comparable to Spain’s.
Basque Country (autonomous community): An autonomous community in northern Spain comprising Álava, Biscay, and Gipuzkoa. This Spanish administrative region is one part of the wider cultural Basque Country.
Carlist Wars: A series of nineteenth-century Spanish conflicts over succession and political order. The wars ended with the loss of key Basque fueros in Spain.
