Batavia

Batavia was the Dutch East India Company’s principal Asian base, founded in 1619 on Java at the site of present-day Jakarta. It served as a center of colonial administration and trade until Dutch rule ended.

Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that held a monopoly on Dutch trade with Asia and exercised governmental powers overseas. The Company founded Batavia and used it to direct its Asian trade and territorial administration.
Jayakarta: A settlement on Java’s northwest coast that preceded Batavia and was captured by the Dutch in 1619. Batavia was established on the ruins of Jayakarta after the Dutch destroyed it.
Pieter Both: The first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, serving from 1610 to 1614. Both established the Company’s early governing presence in Asia before Batavia became its capital.
Jakarta: The capital and largest city of Indonesia, located on the island of Java. Jakarta grew from Batavia and retains the site of its colonial core.
Spice trade: Long-distance commerce in spices such as pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Batavia coordinated the movement and storage of spices across the Company’s Asian network.
Jan Pieterszoon Coen: A Dutch colonial governor and Company official who led the conquest of Jayakarta and founded Batavia. Coen directed the 1619 campaign that made the new headquarters possible.
Herman Willem Daendels: A Dutch colonial governor-general who governed Java from 1808 to 1811 and reorganized its administration and defenses. Daendels transformed Batavia’s defenses and government during the Napoleonic era.
Chinese massacre of 1740: A mass killing of Chinese residents in Batavia by Dutch authorities and other forces in October 1740. The massacre exposed the extreme violence embedded in Batavia’s colonial order.
Dutch East Indies: The Dutch colonial territories in the Indonesian archipelago, later known as Indonesia. Batavia became the administrative center of the Dutch East Indies.
Banten Sultanate: An Islamic sultanate in western Java that controlled a major port and opposed Dutch commercial ambitions. Conflict with Banten shaped the Dutch decision to establish a defensible base nearby.
