Battle of Ayacucho

The Battle of Ayacucho was fought on 9 December 1824 in Peru, where republican forces defeated the Spanish royalist army and effectively ended Spanish rule in mainland South America.

Antonio José de Sucre: A Venezuelan independence leader and general who commanded republican forces at Ayacucho. His deployment and counterattack helped defeat the royalist army.
Peruvian War of Independence: The conflict from 1811 to 1826 in which Peru broke from Spanish rule. Ayacucho was its decisive military turning point.
Treaty of Ayacucho: The 1829 treaty between Peru and Spain that recognized Peruvian independence. It formalized diplomatically the separation that Ayacucho had secured militarily.

José de San Martín: An Argentine general who led independence campaigns in southern South America and proclaimed Peru’s independence in 1821. His earlier campaign opened the Peruvian independence struggle that culminated at Ayacucho.
