Battle of Berezina

A series of engagements in November 1812 in which Napoleon’s retreating Grande Armée crossed the Berezina River while evading Russian forces. The crossing preserved much of the army’s remaining core but ended in catastrophic losses among stragglers and civilians.

Berezina River: A river in present-day Belarus that flows into the Dnieper. Its marshy banks and freezing waters made the crossing both necessary and perilous.

Nicolas Oudinot: A French marshal who commanded corps in the Napoleonic Wars. His corps fought Chichagov’s forces and helped protect the French bridgehead.
Battle of Maloyaroslavets: An indecisive battle in October 1812 that helped drive Napoleon’s retreat onto the devastated Smolensk road. The route chosen after this battle worsened the army’s supply crisis before Berezina.
