Battle of Dandanaqan

The Battle of Dandanaqan was a 1040 Seljuk victory over the Ghaznavid Empire near Merv that secured Seljuk control of Khorasan and transformed the regional balance of power.

Seljuk Empire: A medieval empire founded by the Seljuk Turks that ruled much of the Middle East and Central Asia. The victory opened the way for Seljuk rule across Khorasan and beyond.
Seljuk dynasty: A Turkic Muslim ruling house that established a major empire in the eleventh century. Its leaders and followers formed the rising power that confronted the Ghaznavids.
Seljuk conquest of Persia: The eleventh-century expansion through which the Seljuks took control of much of Iran. The victory gave the Seljuks a base from which to expand westward across Persia.
Battle of Hazarasp: An 1038 Seljuk victory over Ghaznavid forces in Khorasan. This earlier engagement formed part of the campaign that culminated at Dandanaqan.

Chaghri Beg: A Seljuk prince and military leader, brother of Tughril Beg and father of Alp Arslan. He commanded the Seljuk forces that defeated the Ghaznavids at Dandanaqan.
