Battle of Kursk

A major Eastern Front battle in July and August 1943 in which Soviet forces defeated Germany’s offensive around Kursk and seized the strategic initiative.

Kursk Salient: A large Soviet-held bulge in the front line around Kursk in early 1943. Its shape invited Germany’s plan to attack from north and south and encircle Soviet forces.
Battle of Stalingrad: A major 1942–1943 battle in which Soviet forces encircled and defeated a German army at Stalingrad. Germany’s defeat there left the Kursk salient as a focal point for its next eastern offensive.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet marshal who held senior command roles during the Eastern Front campaigns of World War II. He helped advise the Soviet leadership on defending against the expected German attack.
