Battle of Muye

The Battle of Muye was a battle in which Zhou forces defeated the Shang, ending Shang rule and establishing the Zhou dynasty in ancient China.

Shang dynasty: A Bronze Age Chinese dynasty that preceded the Zhou and ruled much of northern China. Its weakening rule set the stage for the Zhou challenge.
Bronze Age warfare in China: Warfare in ancient China characterized by bronze weapons, chariots, infantry, and organized states. Muye belongs to the military world of late Shang and early Zhou states.
Western Zhou: The first phase of Zhou rule, centered in the Wei River valley before the eastern relocation of the royal court. This period began with the Zhou conquest and its new royal government.
Book of Documents: A collection of speeches and documents attributed to early Chinese rulers and officials, compiled over time. Its account of King Wu’s campaign is a major source for the Zhou version of events.
Zhou dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled after the Shang and shaped political thought through the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Its founding followed the victory at Muye.
Chinese chariot: A two-wheeled vehicle drawn by horses and used in ancient Chinese warfare and elite transport. Chariots formed part of the forces described in accounts of the battle.
Duke of Zhou: A Zhou royal prince who helped govern the dynasty after King Wu’s death and shaped its early institutions. His regency consolidated the regime established after the victory.
The Great Declaration: A speech attributed to King Wu before the Zhou attack on the Shang, preserved in the Book of Documents. It presents the moral case for the campaign immediately before Muye.
King Wu of Zhou: The Zhou ruler who led the campaign against the Shang and founded Zhou rule. He commanded the Zhou forces at Muye.
Shang dynasty army: The military forces maintained by the Shang state, including infantry and chariot units. Its reported loss of cohesion helped turn the battle against Shang.
