Battle of Mycale

The Battle of Mycale was a Greek victory over Persian forces near the coast of Ionia, traditionally dated to 479 BCE. Greek sailors fought on land after beaching their ships, then burned the Persian fleet and camp.

Greek trireme: A fast ancient Greek warship propelled by three banks of oars. The Greek fleet brought the allied force to Mycale and provided the ships later burned there.
Ionian Revolt: A Greek uprising against Persian rule in Ionia and neighboring regions from 499 to 493 BCE. The revolt began the chain of conflict that brought Greek armies back to Ionia.
Delian League: An alliance of Greek states led by Athens, founded in 478/477 BCE against Persia. The postwar campaign against Persia developed into the alliance that became the Delian League.
Cimon: An Athenian statesman and general who led campaigns against Persia in the fifth century BCE. Later accounts connect his career to the continuing Greek campaign against Persian forces in Asia Minor.
