Battle of Rancagua

The 1814 siege and battle in which Spanish royalist forces defeated Chilean patriot troops at Rancagua, ending Chile’s Patria Vieja period and prompting patriot leaders to flee across the Andes.

Siege of Rancagua: A two-day royalist encirclement and assault on Chilean patriot forces in Rancagua in October 1814. Royalist troops sealed the town and attacked its defenders from multiple directions.
Patria Vieja: The first period of Chilean self-government, from 1810 until the royalist reconquest in 1814. Rancagua’s defeat ended this initial phase of Chilean independence.
Emigration to Mendoza: The 1814 flight of Chilean patriots and civilians across the Andes to the Argentine province of Mendoza. Defeat sent O’Higgins, Carrera, and many supporters into exile.
