Battle of Siffin

A battle fought in 657 between forces loyal to Caliph Ali and Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan during the First Fitna. It ended with arbitration after neither side secured a decisive victory.

First Fitna: The first civil war in the early Muslim community, fought from 656 to 661. Siffin was a central confrontation in this wider struggle over leadership.
Ali: The fourth caliph in Sunni tradition and the first imam in Shi'a Islam, who ruled from 656 to 661. Ali led the forces opposing Muawiya at Siffin.
Kharijites: An early Islamic movement that rejected both Ali and Muawiya and developed distinctive doctrines of leadership and sin. Some of Ali’s supporters broke with him after rejecting arbitration.
Battle of Yarmouk: A 636 battle in which the Rashidun army defeated Byzantine forces in the Levant. Unlike Siffin, Yarmouk ended in a decisive military victory.
Battle of the Camel: A 656 battle near Basra between forces of Ali and a coalition led by Aisha, Talha, and Zubayr. This earlier battle was another major armed contest during Ali’s caliphate.
Muawiya I: The Umayyad ruler who governed Syria and later became caliph, founding the Umayyad Caliphate. Muawiya led the Syrian forces and contested Ali’s authority.
Battle of Nahrawan: A 658 battle in which Ali’s forces defeated Kharijite rebels near the Nahrawan canal in Iraq. It followed the rupture within Ali’s camp that arbitration helped provoke.
Treaty of Hasan–Muawiya: The 661 agreement by which Hasan ibn Ali relinquished the caliphate to Muawiya. This settlement transferred authority, unlike Siffin’s inconclusive arbitration.
Arbitration of Siffin: Negotiations appointed after Siffin to settle the dispute between Ali and Muawiya. The battle ended with this process instead of a military decision.
Uthman: The third caliph, whose assassination in 656 triggered a succession crisis and civil war. Disputes over responsibility for his killing drove the confrontation between Ali and Muawiya.
