Battle of the Dnieper

A 1943 campaign on the Eastern Front in which Soviet forces crossed the Dnieper River and recaptured much of eastern Ukraine from German forces.

Dnieper River: A major river of eastern Europe flowing through Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine to the Black Sea. Its broad channel and western-bank heights shaped the campaign’s crossings and defenses.
Battle of Kursk: A major 1943 battle on the Eastern Front that ended Germany’s last large-scale offensive in the east. Its outcome allowed Soviet forces to seize the initiative and advance toward the Dnieper.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet marshal who commanded major Red Army operations during World War II. He coordinated Soviet operations on the central and southern sectors of the Dnieper front.
Kyiv: The capital of Ukraine, located on the Dnieper River. Its recapture on 6 November 1943 marked a major Soviet success in the campaign.
Battle of the Bukrin bridgehead: A series of Soviet attacks from the Bukrin bridgehead against German defenses in autumn 1943. Repeated assaults there failed, prompting the Soviet shift to the Lyutezh approach.
Bukrin bridgehead: A Soviet foothold west of the Dnieper, southeast of Kyiv, established during the 1943 campaign. Soviet attacks from this bridgehead failed to break through toward Kyiv.
Operation Polkovodets Rumyantsev: A Soviet offensive in August 1943 that retook Belgorod and Kharkiv from German forces. Its gains opened the route across eastern Ukraine toward the Dnieper.
Nikolai Vatutin: A Soviet general who commanded the First Ukrainian Front during the 1943 campaign. His front carried out the offensive that retook Kyiv.
Right-bank Ukraine: The part of Ukraine west of the Dnieper River, historically called Right-bank Ukraine. The campaign established Soviet footholds that enabled later operations into this region.
Battle of the Lyutezh bridgehead: The Soviet operation from the Lyutezh bridgehead that helped retake Kyiv in November 1943. Its successful northern approach contrasted with the stalled Bukrin attacks.
