Battle of the Java Sea

A naval battle fought on 27 February 1942 in which Japanese forces defeated an Allied fleet defending the Dutch East Indies, opening the way for Japan’s conquest of Java.

ABDA Command: A short-lived Allied command formed in January 1942 to defend Southeast Asia against Japanese expansion. Its fragmented command structure shaped how the Allied ships entered the battle.
Pacific War: The theater of World War II fought across East Asia and the Pacific Ocean, chiefly between Japan and the Allied powers. The battle was part of Japan’s rapid southward expansion in this wider war.

HNLMS De Ruyter: A Dutch light cruiser that served as the flagship of Rear Admiral Karel Doorman. Doorman was aboard when the cruiser was sunk during the battle.
Fall of Singapore: The surrender of British Singapore to Japan on 15 February 1942. Its fall weakened Allied coordination just before the battle.
