Battle of the Trench

A 627 CE siege of Medina in which Muslim defenders used a trench to repel a confederation led by Quraysh and allied tribes.

Trench warfare: A form of warfare in which opposing forces rely on trenches for protection and tactical advantage. The Medina trench was a local defensive adaptation, not the prolonged trench system associated with modern wars.
Battle of Uhud: A 625 CE battle near Medina between Muhammad’s forces and Quraysh of Mecca. Its outcome left the conflict between Medina and Quraysh unresolved before the siege.
Treaty of Hudaybiyyah: A 628 CE agreement between Muhammad’s community and Quraysh that established a truce and opened a path to pilgrimage. The siege’s failure preceded a shift toward negotiation between Medina and Quraysh.
Ibn Ishaq: An eighth-century Muslim historian whose biography of Muhammad survives chiefly through later recensions. His account is a major source for the events of the siege.
Salman al-Farsi: A companion of Muhammad traditionally credited with proposing the trench defense at Medina. Islamic accounts associate his proposal with the defensive plan that shaped the siege.
Battle of Badr: A 624 CE battle in which Muhammad’s forces defeated a Quraysh army near Badr. The defeat intensified the rivalry that later brought Quraysh and allies against Medina.
Conquest of Mecca: The 630 CE entry of Muhammad and his followers into Mecca, after Quraysh’s alliance with Medina was broken. It followed the changing balance of power after Quraysh failed to take Medina.
Ibn Hisham: A ninth-century Muslim scholar known for editing and transmitting Ibn Ishaq’s biography of Muhammad. His recension preserves one of the best-known narrative accounts of the battle.
Medina: A city in western Arabia that became the political center of Muhammad’s community. Its exposed approaches and settlements made a defensive barrier central to the city’s protection.
Quraysh: A powerful tribal confederation that dominated Mecca before and during Muhammad’s lifetime. Quraysh organized the principal force seeking to defeat Muhammad’s community at Medina.
