Battle of Uman

A German encirclement operation in July and August 1941 that trapped Soviet forces near Uman in Ukraine, during the German invasion of the Soviet Union.

Battle of Brody: A large tank battle fought in June 1941 between German and Soviet forces in western Ukraine. It preceded the Uman encirclement along the German advance through Ukraine.
Operation Barbarossa: Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, launched on 22 June 1941. The Uman operation unfolded during Barbarossa’s advance into Ukraine.
Ewald von Kleist: A German field marshal who commanded Panzer forces during the invasion of the Soviet Union. He led the armored formation whose drive contributed to the pocket’s closure.
Battle of Kyiv (1941): A German encirclement victory in September 1941 that captured a large Soviet force around Kyiv. Uman preceded the larger destruction of Soviet armies farther north in Ukraine.
