Bayezid II

Bayezid II was Ottoman sultan from 1481 to 1512. His reign strengthened imperial institutions and included the resettlement of many Jews expelled from Spain in 1492.

Mehmed II: Mehmed II was Ottoman sultan from 1444 to 1446 and 1451 to 1481, conquering Constantinople in 1453. His death in 1481 opened the succession that brought Bayezid to the throne.
Devshirme: Devshirme was an Ottoman levy that recruited Christian boys for state service, including the Janissary corps. The recruitment system supplied elite servants and soldiers during Bayezid’s reign.
Selim I: Selim I was Ottoman sultan from 1512 to 1520, succeeding his father Bayezid II. His challenge forced Bayezid to abdicate and ended the reign.
Alhambra Decree: The Alhambra Decree was the 1492 order expelling Jews from the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon unless they converted. Its expulsion created the refugee movement welcomed into Bayezid’s empire.

Ahmed Sultan: Ahmed Sultan was an Ottoman prince and son of Bayezid II who competed for the succession. Bayezid’s support for Ahmed became a focal point of the final succession crisis.
Spanish Inquisition: The Spanish Inquisition was a tribunal established in 1478 to investigate and punish heresy among Christians in Spain. Its persecution and the expulsion decree helped drive Jewish migration to Ottoman territories.
Ottoman interregnum: The Ottoman Interregnum was the civil war among Ottoman princes following the defeat and capture of Bayezid I in 1402. Unlike that earlier succession crisis, Bayezid II’s struggle ended with a single clear successor.
