Beas River

The Beas River rises in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh and flows through Himachal Pradesh and Punjab before joining the Sutlej River.

Beas Kund: A glacial lake in Himachal Pradesh traditionally identified as the source of the Beas River. This high-altitude lake marks the river’s traditional source near Rohtang Pass.
Rohtang Pass: A high mountain pass in Himachal Pradesh connecting the Kullu Valley with Lahaul and Spiti. The Beas rises near this pass in the Pir Panjal range.
Beas–Sutlej Link: A hydropower and water-transfer project that diverts Beas water toward the Sutlej basin. It channels water from the Beas through the Pandoh Dam system.
Battle of the Hydaspes: A battle fought in 326 BCE between Alexander the Great and King Porus near the Jhelum River. After this campaign, Alexander’s troops refused to advance east toward the Beas.
Kullu Valley: A Himalayan valley in Himachal Pradesh drained by the upper Beas River. The river runs through this valley after descending from its headwaters.
Himalayas: A mountain range in Asia containing the world’s highest peaks and the sources of many major rivers. The Beas originates in this mountain system.

Porus: An ancient Indian king who fought Alexander the Great near the Jhelum River in 326 BCE. His defeat preceded Alexander’s army reaching the Beas and refusing to cross it.
Mandi, Himachal Pradesh: A city in Himachal Pradesh situated on the Beas River. The river passes through Mandi as it continues southeast.
Vedic period: A period of ancient South Asian history associated with the composition of the Vedas. The river is identified with Vipāś in Vedic texts.
