Beiyang Army

The Beiyang Army was a modern Qing military force organized and commanded by Yuan Shikai. After the Qing dynasty fell, its commanders and troops became central to the politics and warfare of early Republican China.

Self-Strengthening Movement: A late Qing reform movement that sought to strengthen China through selective adoption of Western technology and military methods. Its military reforms formed part of the background to creating modern forces such as the Beiyang Army.
Baoding Military Academy: A military academy established in Baoding in 1902 to train officers for China’s modern armed forces. Its graduates later supplied officers to Beiyang-aligned military factions.
Xinhai Revolution: The 1911–1912 revolution that ended the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China. Yuan used his military position during the revolution to negotiate the Qing abdication and assume the presidency.
Xiang Army: A regional Qing force organized by Zeng Guofan to suppress the Taiping Rebellion, drawing heavily on Hunan recruits. It was an earlier regional army whose organization contrasted with the Beiyang Army’s modernized structure.
Huai Army: A regional Qing army raised by Li Hongzhang during the Taiping Rebellion and staffed largely by soldiers from Anhui. It supplied personnel and organizational precedents for the Beiyang Army.
Beiyang Fleet: A Qing naval force established in the late nineteenth century and destroyed in the First Sino-Japanese War. It shows the earlier limits of Qing modernization compared with the army Yuan later organized.
Republic of China: A Chinese republic founded in 1912 after the fall of the Qing dynasty. Beiyang commanders became central power brokers in the republic’s early years.
Eight Banners: The hereditary military and social system through which the Qing ruling house organized Manchu and allied households. The Beiyang Army relied on modern recruitment and training rather than the dynasty’s hereditary banner system.
Yuan Shikai: A Qing and Republican Chinese military and political leader who served as president and briefly proclaimed himself emperor. He built and commanded the force that made his political ascent possible.
Military faction: A political grouping whose cohesion and influence depend substantially on armed forces and their commanders. Beiyang commanders turned military ties into competing political factions after the dynasty fell.
