Bengali

Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. It is written in the Bengali script and has a major literary tradition.

Bengali script: An abugida used to write Bengali and several other languages of eastern South Asia. Its letters represent the language in its standard writing system.
Magadhi Prakrit: An ancient Middle Indo-Aryan language associated with the eastern Gangetic region. It is among the historical language stages associated with Bengali’s ancestry.
Rabindranath Tagore: A Bengali poet, writer, composer, and educator who won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. His songs and writing expanded Bengali literature and helped shape modern Bengali culture.
Bangladesh: A country in South Asia whose official language is Bengali. Bengali is the principal language of public life and national identity there.
Assamese language: An Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in the Indian state of Assam. It is a neighboring eastern Indo-Aryan language with a distinct literary standard.
Indo-Aryan languages: A branch of Indo-European languages spoken across much of South Asia. Bengali belongs to this language family and shares its historical ancestry.
Apabhraṃśa: A group of late Middle Indo-Aryan vernaculars that preceded many modern Indo-Aryan languages. Eastern Apabhraṃśa forms contributed to the transition toward early Bengali.
Kazi Nazrul Islam: A Bengali poet, musician, and political activist known as the national poet of Bangladesh. His poetry and songs brought a distinctive, rebellious voice to Bengali literature.
West Bengal: A state in eastern India where Bengali is the principal language. Its institutions and communities sustain Bengali alongside other languages of India.
Odia language: An Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in the Indian state of Odisha. Its separate history and standard distinguish it from Bengali despite geographic proximity.
