Nepali language

Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Nepal and also in parts of India and Bhutan. It is Nepal’s official language.

Devanagari: A writing system used for several South Asian languages, including Nepali and Hindi. Nepali is conventionally written in this script.
Khas people: A Himalayan ethnolinguistic community historically associated with the western Himalaya. Their speech communities are central to accounts of Nepali’s early development.
Languages of Nepal: The many languages spoken within Nepal, from several language families. Nepali serves as a national lingua franca within a highly multilingual country.
Hindi: An Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in India and written in Devanagari. Hindi shares a script and related vocabulary with Nepali but is a distinct language.
Indo-Aryan languages: A branch of the Indo-Iranian languages spoken across South Asia. Nepali belongs to this language family.
Gorkha Kingdom: A Himalayan kingdom that expanded under the Shah dynasty and became the basis of modern Nepal. Gorkha’s expansion helped spread Nepali across the territories unified as Nepal.
Official languages of Nepal: Languages granted official status under Nepal’s legal and constitutional arrangements. Nepali has federal official status, alongside provincial recognition of other languages.
Bengali: An Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a neighboring major Indo-Aryan language with a different script and literary history.
Nepali grammar: The system of word forms and sentence patterns used in Nepali. It describes Nepali’s inflection, word order, and grammatical relations.
Prithvi Narayan Shah: The eighteenth-century ruler of Gorkha who led the unification of much of present-day Nepal. His campaigns helped establish the political conditions for Nepali’s wider use.
