Bernard Bolzano

Bernard Bolzano (1781–1848) was a Bohemian philosopher, mathematician, and Catholic priest whose work anticipated modern logic, set theory, and rigorous mathematical analysis.

Bolzano–Weierstrass theorem: Every bounded sequence of real numbers has a convergent subsequence. This theorem bears Bolzano’s name and exemplifies his foundational work on mathematical analysis.
Bolzano's proof of the intermediate value theorem: Bolzano’s proof establishes that a continuous function assumes every value between two endpoint values. It illustrates his effort to prove analytic results without relying on geometric intuition.
Prague: The capital of Bohemia and a major Central European city, historically part of the Habsburg monarchy. Bolzano was born, educated, and taught in Prague.
Georg Cantor: A German mathematician who founded modern set theory and developed a theory of infinite cardinalities. Cantor later developed ideas about infinity that Bolzano had explored in earlier work.
Wissenschaftslehre: Bolzano’s four-volume work on the foundations, structure, and methods of knowledge and science. It contains his systematic account of propositions, ideas, and objective truth.

Cauchy sequence: A sequence whose terms become arbitrarily close to one another as the sequence advances. Bolzano used convergence reasoning of this kind in work that preceded its later formal treatment.
Charles University: A university founded in Prague in 1348, among the oldest institutions of higher learning in Europe. Bolzano studied philosophy and mathematics there and later held a professorship.
Karl Weierstrass: A German mathematician known for establishing rigorous foundations for mathematical analysis. Weierstrass helped shape the analytic tradition to which Bolzano’s work was a precursor.
Theory of propositions in themselves: Bolzano’s account of propositions as objective, mind-independent entities capable of being true or false. This theory became one of his most distinctive contributions to logic and philosophy.
