Book of Common Prayer

The Book of Common Prayer is a collection of authorized prayers, services, and rites used in Anglican churches. First published for the Church of England in 1549, it has appeared in many national and denominational editions.

Daily Office: A cycle of Christian prayers and readings appointed for recurring times of day. Morning and evening prayer are among the Prayer Book’s central daily services.
Thomas Cranmer: Archbishop of Canterbury who shaped the English Reformation and the first Book of Common Prayer. Cranmer was the chief architect of the 1549 and 1552 Prayer Books.
Anglican Communion: A worldwide fellowship of autonomous churches sharing historical ties to the Church of England. National churches adapted Prayer Book worship while retaining a common Anglican inheritance.

English Reformation: The sixteenth-century transformation of the English church and its relationship to papal authority. The Prayer Book gave the Reformation a shared English-language form of worship.
Prayer Book Rebellion: A 1549 uprising in Cornwall and Devon against the imposition of the English Prayer Book. Resistance showed how language and liturgical change could provoke political revolt.
Lutheran liturgy: The worship traditions developed in churches shaped by Martin Luther’s reforms. Lutheran services show another Reformation path for revising inherited Christian worship.
Church year: The annual cycle of seasons and feast days that structures Christian worship. The Prayer Book assigns readings and prayers to seasons such as Advent and Easter.
Act of Uniformity 1549: An English statute requiring use of the first Book of Common Prayer in public worship. The act made the 1549 book the prescribed service book in England.
