Boxer Protocol

The 1901 agreement ending the Boxer Uprising and imposing indemnities, military restrictions, and other obligations on Qing China.

Boxer Protocol indemnity: A monetary payment imposed on China by the Boxer Protocol to compensate foreign powers for losses during the uprising. The protocol’s largest long-term burden was its indemnity, payable over decades.
Boxers (Yihequan): Members of a Chinese popular movement that opposed foreign influence and Christian missions around 1900. Their attacks helped trigger the crisis that produced the protocol.

Treaty of Shimonoseki: The 1895 treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War and forced China to cede territory and pay Japan an indemnity. It shows that China faced a major indemnity before the Boxer settlement.
