Brabant Revolution

The Brabant Revolution was an uprising in the Austrian Netherlands from 1789 to 1790 that briefly established the independent United Belgian States before Austrian rule was restored.

Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor: Joseph II was Holy Roman Emperor from 1765 to 1790 and ruler of the Habsburg Netherlands, known for sweeping administrative and religious reforms. His reforms in the Austrian Netherlands provoked opposition that helped trigger the uprising.
Statists: The Statists were conservative opponents of Joseph II who defended provincial privileges and traditional institutions in the Austrian Netherlands. They organized much of the revolt around restoring historic rights rather than creating a centralized republic.
United Belgian States: The United Belgian States was a confederation formed in 1790 by provinces that had rebelled against Habsburg rule. Its formation was the revolution’s central political achievement.
French Revolution: The French Revolution began in 1789 and transformed France through the overthrow of monarchy and the creation of a republic. Its social and political transformation went further than the Brabant movement’s defense of inherited provincial rights.
Josephine reforms: Josephine reforms were the centralized administrative, religious, and legal changes pursued by Joseph II across the Habsburg monarchy. Their implementation in the Austrian Netherlands threatened established institutions and provincial autonomy.
Vonckists: The Vonckists were reform-minded revolutionaries in the Austrian Netherlands, named for their leader Jan Frans Vonck. Their conflict with the Statists weakened cooperation within the revolutionary movement.

Jean-André van der Mersch: Jean-André van der Mersch was a military commander who led rebel forces during the Brabant Revolution. His victories helped drive Austrian forces from the region in 1789.
