Bridgewater Canal

The Bridgewater Canal is a canal in northwest England, opened in 1761 to carry coal from the Duke of Bridgewater’s mines to Manchester. Its construction helped establish the commercial canal as a major form of transport in Britain.

Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater: An English aristocrat who financed the Bridgewater Canal to transport coal from his mines. His coal mines and investment gave the canal its purpose and its name.
Worsley Navigable Levels: Underground waterways built to carry coal from mines near Worsley to the Bridgewater Canal. They let coal move by boat from deep inside the Duke’s mines directly into the canal.
