British Hong Kong

British Hong Kong was the territory governed by Britain from 1841 until its transfer to China in 1997. Its status shifted from colony to dependent territory, while its population and economy grew into a major global trading center.

First Opium War: A war between Britain and Qing China from 1839 to 1842, ending in China’s defeat and the Treaty of Nanking. Britain’s victory opened the way to acquiring Hong Kong Island.
Governor of Hong Kong: The chief executive appointed by Britain to administer Hong Kong during colonial rule. Governors exercised authority on behalf of the British Crown.
