British imperialism

British imperialism was the extension and maintenance of British power over other territories and peoples through conquest, settlement, trade, diplomacy, and indirect rule.

British Empire: A worldwide empire governed or controlled by Britain from the sixteenth century to the late twentieth century. The empire was the political framework through which British imperial power expanded and endured.
Age of Discovery: The period of European overseas exploration and expansion beginning in the fifteenth century. European maritime expansion created the setting for England's early overseas ventures.
Indian Rebellion of 1857: A widespread uprising against East India Company rule in northern and central India in 1857–1858. The rebellion ended company government and led to direct rule by the British Crown.
French colonial empire: The overseas territories ruled by France, particularly during its two major periods of colonial expansion. Its administrative traditions and imperial claims offer a comparison with British colonial rule.
East India Company: An English and later British joint-stock company that traded in Asia and governed much of India before 1858. Its commercial privileges and private armies made company rule a major instrument of expansion in India.
English colonization of the Americas: The establishment of English colonies in the Americas from the late sixteenth century onward. These colonies established enduring patterns of settlement, extraction, and imperial administration.
British Raj: The period of direct British Crown rule over India from 1858 to 1947. It was the central imperial administration governing the subcontinent after the 1857 rebellion.
Dutch Empire: The overseas territories and commercial networks controlled by the Netherlands from the sixteenth century onward. Dutch commercial empire highlights similarities and differences in European trade-driven expansion.
Settler colonialism: A form of colonialism in which settlers establish permanent communities and seek control of Indigenous land. British settlement colonies extended sovereignty by dispossessing Indigenous peoples and building permanent communities.
Navigation Acts: A series of English and British laws that regulated colonial trade and shipping from the seventeenth century. They sought to channel colonial commerce through British shipping and markets.
