Treaty of Pangkor : A 1874 agreement that established British residency in Perak and widened British political influence in the Malay states. It marked the shift from informal influence toward intervention in the peninsula’s sultanates.
British Residents in the Malay States : British officials advising Malay rulers, whose recommendations generally controlled state administration except in matters of Malay religion and custom. The resident system allowed substantial British control without formally abolishing the sultanates.

Straits Settlements : A British Crown colony comprising Penang, Singapore, and Malacca, administered together from 1826 to 1946. These coastal colonies formed the earliest institutional base of British power in the region.
Malay sultanates : Monarchical states ruled by Malay sultans, with authority shaped by local custom, Islam, and colonial arrangements. Sultans retained formal status while British officials increasingly directed government.
Frank Swettenham : A British colonial administrator who served as Resident-General of the Federated Malay States and later governor of the Straits Settlements. He helped consolidate British administration across the federated states.
Malayan Union : A 1946 British proposal to unite Malayan territories under a centralized government with broadened citizenship. Its rejection mobilized Malay opposition and led to a different constitutional arrangement.
Crown colony : A territory governed directly by the British Crown through colonial officials. The Straits Settlements were Crown colonies, unlike protectorates ruled formally through Malay sultans.
