Bromoform

Bromoform is a colorless, dense liquid halomethane with the formula CHBr₃. It has been used as a solvent and, historically, as a sedative and expectorant.

Haloalkane: An organic compound in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by halogen atoms. Bromoform is a haloalkane with three bromine atoms bonded to one carbon.
Haloform reaction: A reaction that converts methyl ketones into haloforms under halogenating, alkaline conditions. Its bromine variant can produce bromoform from suitable methyl ketones.
Organic solvent: A carbon-containing liquid used to dissolve substances in chemical processes. Bromoform's ability to dissolve some materials supported its historical use as a solvent.
Toxicology: The study of harmful effects caused by chemicals and other agents in living organisms. Toxicology explains why historical medicinal use of bromoform was abandoned.
Halomethane: A methane derivative in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by halogen atoms. Bromoform belongs to this one-carbon family of halogenated compounds.
Bromination: A chemical reaction that introduces bromine into a molecule or material. Bromoform can form through repeated bromination of a methyl group followed by cleavage.
Sedative: A substance that reduces alertness or agitation, often by depressing central nervous system activity. Bromoform was formerly administered as a sedative before its risks were better understood.
Hepatotoxicity: Liver injury caused by exposure to a chemical or other agent. Bromoform can damage the liver at sufficiently high exposures.
Bromine: A reddish-brown halogen element that forms diatomic molecules and many organobromine compounds. Three bromine atoms give bromoform much of its high molecular mass and density.
Methyl ketone: An organic compound containing a carbonyl group bonded to a methyl group. Methyl ketones are common starting materials in laboratory preparations of bromoform.
