Brooklyn

Brooklyn is the most populous borough of New York City, occupying the western end of Long Island. It was an independent city before joining New York City in 1898.

New Netherland: A Dutch colonial province in North America that existed from 1614 until England seized it in 1664. Brooklyn’s earliest European settlements formed within this Dutch colony.
Brooklyn Bridge: A New York City suspension bridge connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan across the East River, opened in 1883. It created a durable road and pedestrian link between the former independent city and Manhattan.

New Amsterdam: The Dutch colonial settlement at the southern tip of Manhattan that became New York City. Its Dutch authorities governed settlements on the western end of Long Island.
Manhattan Bridge: A suspension bridge connecting Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn across the East River. It added another major crossing as Brooklyn and Manhattan grew more interconnected.
Jackie Robinson: An American baseball player who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. His Dodgers career made Brooklyn a landmark in baseball’s integration.
Prospect Park: A large public park in Brooklyn designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. It provides a major landscape for recreation and conservation in the borough.
Manhattan: The most densely populated borough of New York City, occupying an island between the Hudson and East rivers. Manhattan was Brooklyn’s commercial neighbor across the East River and the center of the 1898 merger.
