Building management system : A centralized or distributed system that monitors and controls a building’s mechanical and electrical equipment. It is the software and control platform that coordinates many automated building systems.
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning : Systems that control indoor temperature, humidity, air movement, and ventilation. HVAC is a major building load and a primary target for automated control.
Sensor : A device that detects a physical condition and produces a signal representing it. Sensors provide the temperature, occupancy, and air-quality measurements that controls act on.
Smart building : A building that uses connected technologies and data to improve operation, occupant experience, or resource use. Smart building is the broader idea; building automation supplies much of its operational control.

Building control system : A system of sensors, controllers, and actuators that regulates building equipment. It forms the feedback loop behind automated adjustments to building conditions.
Access control : Methods and systems that determine who may enter a place or use a resource. Building automation can coordinate electronic entry systems with alarms and occupancy information.
