Burma campaign

The Allied and Japanese military operations in Burma from 1942 to 1945, fought as part of the Second World War in Southeast Asia.

Burma Road: A road linking Lashio in Burma with Kunming in China, used to supply Chinese forces before its closure in 1942. Its loss after Japan captured Lashio cut the main overland Allied supply route to China.
Japanese invasion of Burma: Japan's 1942 military campaign that drove British and Allied forces from Burma. It opened the Burma campaign by overwhelming Allied positions and occupying the country.
William Slim: A British general who commanded the Fourteenth Army in Burma from 1943 to 1945. Slim reorganized the Allied army and led its return through central Burma.
Battle of Meiktila: A 1945 battle in central Burma in which Allied forces seized a key Japanese communications hub. Its capture disrupted Japanese control and accelerated the Allied advance toward Rangoon.
Operation U-Go: The Japanese 1944 offensive through Imphal and Kohima intended to invade India and destroy Allied forces there. Its defeat contrasts with the successful Allied offensives that followed in Burma.
Ledo Road: A wartime road built from Assam in India through northern Burma to connect with the Burma Road in China. Its construction restored an overland supply route during the Allied advance through northern Burma.
Fall of Rangoon: The Japanese capture of Rangoon, Burma's principal port, in March 1942. Losing Rangoon deprived the Allies of their main port and helped force their retreat north.
Orde Wingate: A British officer who organized the Chindits for long-range operations behind Japanese lines. Wingate championed deep-penetration raids and secured air support for forces operating in the jungle.
Operation Dracula: The 1945 Allied amphibious operation that recaptured Rangoon, Burma's capital and principal port. Taking Rangoon secured the main port before the monsoon and helped end the campaign.
Battle of Kohima: A 1944 battle in northeast India in which Allied forces stopped Japan's advance toward the Imphal plain. Together with Imphal, Kohima marked the failure of Japan's invasion of India.
