Caliphate

A caliphate is an Islamic polity or institution headed by a caliph, regarded as succeeding Muhammad’s political leadership of the Muslim community. Its forms and claims to authority have varied across history.

Succession to Muhammad: The dispute over who should lead the Muslim community after Muhammad’s death in 632. The first caliphate emerged from this contested transfer of leadership.
Caliph: A title for a leader regarded as successor to Muhammad in governing the Muslim community. The caliph’s office gives the caliphate its defining leadership.
Umayyad Caliphate: The dynasty that ruled a caliphate from 661 to 750, with its capital at Damascus. The Umayyads transformed leadership into a dynastic empire.
Sunni–Shia split: The historical division between Sunni and Shia Muslims, rooted in disputes over leadership after Muhammad’s death. Early disagreements over succession became a durable division within Islam.
Rashidun Caliphate: The caliphate ruled by Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali from 632 to 661. Its four rulers became a lasting model of early caliphal leadership.
Bay'ah: A pledge of allegiance made to a ruler or leader in Islamic political practice. Pledges of allegiance could publicly affirm a caliph’s accession and authority.
Fatimid Caliphate: An Ismaili Shia caliphate that ruled parts of North Africa and the Middle East from 909 to 1171. The Fatimids claimed caliphal authority against the Abbasids.
Islamic Golden Age: A period of major intellectual and cultural activity across parts of the Islamic world, especially from the eighth to thirteenth centuries. Caliphal courts and cities supported scholarship, though learning extended beyond caliphal rule.
Saqqifa: The meeting at Saqqifa where some of Muhammad’s companions pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr in 632. The meeting established Abu Bakr’s succession amid disagreement over representation.
Shura: Consultation in decision-making, especially as a principle of Islamic governance. Consultation could inform succession and governance without settling a single procedure.
