Canaan

Canaan was an ancient region of the southern Levant, encompassing parts of present-day Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. Biblical tradition identifies it as the land promised to the Israelites.

Southern Levant: The southern part of the Levant, encompassing territories around the eastern Mediterranean’s southeastern coast. Canaan occupied much of this geographic region.
Canaanites: The ancient peoples of Canaan, known from archaeological evidence and texts from neighboring societies. They were the region’s inhabitants before and alongside emerging Israelite communities.
Hebrew Bible: The collection of Jewish scriptures comprising the Torah, Prophets, and Writings. Its narratives and laws make Canaan the land promised to Abraham’s descendants.
Israel: A modern state established in 1948 on territory in the southern Levant. Its modern borders and political history are distinct from ancient Canaan.

Canaanite languages: A branch of Northwest Semitic languages that includes Phoenician, Hebrew, and Moabite. These related languages developed among peoples of the region.
Philistia: A region along Canaan’s southern Mediterranean coast occupied by the Philistines in the Iron Age. Philistia became a neighboring power in the southern part of the region.
