Cape Colony

A European colony at Africa’s southern tip, established by the Dutch in 1652 and governed by Britain from 1806 until it joined the Union of South Africa in 1910.

Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered trading company that held a monopoly on Dutch trade with Asia from 1602 to 1799. It founded the Cape settlement in 1652 to supply ships traveling between Europe and Asia.
Trekboers: Dutch-speaking pastoral settlers who moved beyond the Cape’s settled districts to establish farms. Their frontier migrations extended colonial occupation far beyond the original settlement.
Lord Charles Somerset: A British colonial governor of the Cape from 1814 to 1826. His administration expanded British influence and imposed policies on the colony’s population.

Andries Stockenström: A Cape-born colonial official who served as lieutenant-governor of the eastern districts and advocated frontier reforms. His proposals reflected attempts to limit conflict between settlers and African communities.
Abolition of slavery in the British Empire: The legal end of slavery across most of the British Empire, enacted in 1833 and taking effect in 1834. It ended legal slavery in the Cape Colony, though former slaves faced continuing restrictions.
Cape of Good Hope: A headland at the southwestern tip of Africa, historically important to maritime routes around the continent. The colony took its name from this landmark and controlled its surrounding approaches.
Slavery at the Cape: A system of forced labor in the Cape Colony involving enslaved people brought from Africa and Asia. Enslaved labor sustained farms and households, profoundly shaping Cape society.
