Orange Free State

The Orange Free State was an independent Boer republic in southern Africa from 1854 until British annexation in 1900, when it became the Orange River Colony.

Sand River Convention: A 1852 agreement in which Britain recognized the independence of Boer communities north of the Vaal River. It established the policy of recognition that preceded the republic’s founding.
