Carpe diem

Carpe diem is a literary motif urging people to seize present pleasures because life is brief. It turns awareness of mortality into an argument for enjoying the present.

Horace: Horace was a Roman poet whose odes shaped Latin lyric poetry. His ode to Leuconoe contains the phrase “carpe diem.”
Tempus fugit: Tempus fugit is the idea that time flies and life passes quickly. The phrase states the passing-time premise that gives carpe diem its urgency.
To His Coy Mistress: To His Coy Mistress is a poem by Andrew Marvell in which a speaker urges his beloved to act before time and death overtake them. Its argument turns carpe diem into a seduction built around time’s limits.
Ubi sunt: Ubi sunt is a literary motif asking where the people and things of the past have gone. It looks backward at vanished life, unlike carpe diem’s call to act now.
