Caste War of Yucatán

A prolonged uprising by Maya communities against Yucatecan and Mexican authorities in the Yucatán Peninsula, beginning in 1847 and continuing into the early twentieth century.

Maya peoples: Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica whose diverse communities share historical and cultural connections. Maya communities formed the insurgency’s core, though their motives and alliances varied.
Chan Santa Cruz: A Maya political and religious center founded by insurgents in the forests of eastern Yucatán. Its establishment gave the rebel movement a durable center beyond government control.
Tepich: A village in Yucatán where Maya rebels launched a major uprising in July 1847. The attack on Tepich is commonly treated as the war’s opening event.
Yucatán Peninsula: A peninsula in southeastern Mexico and northern Central America, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The conflict’s campaigns and political consequences extended across the peninsula.
Yucatán Republic: A nineteenth-century independent state in the Yucatán Peninsula that later rejoined Mexico. The republic’s conflicts with Mexico weakened authority before the uprising began.

Siege of Valladolid (1848): An 1848 insurgent siege of the city of Valladolid during the Caste War. Its failure preceded a major retreat of rebel forces from western Yucatán.
Henequen industry: The cultivation and processing of henequen fiber, a major export industry in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Yucatán. Its expansion strengthened estate economies and intensified pressure on Maya lands.
Maya land dispossession: The loss of Indigenous land through state policies, private ownership, and expansion of commercial agriculture. Loss of communal lands intensified grievances against Yucatecan authorities and estate owners.
Talking Cross: A religious oracle associated with a cross that spoke through interpreters at Chan Santa Cruz. Its messages helped legitimate leadership and coordinate the Cruzob community.
