Knowra Celecoxib Celecoxib Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that preferentially inhibits cyclooxygenase-2, reducing prostaglandin production to relieve pain and inflammation.
Cyclooxygenase-2 : An enzyme that produces prostaglandins involved in inflammation, pain, fever, and other physiological functions. Celecoxib binds this enzyme preferentially, limiting inflammatory prostaglandin production.
Osteoarthritis : A joint disorder involving cartilage damage and changes in surrounding bone and tissues. Celecoxib can reduce osteoarthritis pain and inflammation.
Cardiovascular risk of NSAIDs : The increased risk of events such as heart attack and stroke associated with some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Celecoxib can increase cardiovascular risk, especially with higher doses or longer use.
Ibuprofen : A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2. Unlike ibuprofen, celecoxib preferentially inhibits COX-2 rather than blocking both enzymes similarly.
Prostaglandin : A group of lipid signaling molecules that regulate inflammation, pain, fever, and functions in multiple organs. Reduced prostaglandin synthesis mediates celecoxib’s relief of pain and inflammation.
Rheumatoid arthritis : A chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammatory joint damage and can affect other organs. Celecoxib may relieve symptoms but does not stop the underlying autoimmune disease.
Gastrointestinal bleeding : Blood loss from injury to the digestive tract, which can range from mild to life-threatening. Celecoxib may cause ulcers or bleeding, though its risk can be lower than that of some nonselective NSAIDs.
Naproxen : A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat pain and inflammation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes. Naproxen is a common alternative, with a different balance of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risks.
Cyclooxygenase-1 : An enzyme that produces prostaglandins supporting functions such as stomach-lining protection and platelet activity. Celecoxib generally spares this enzyme more than traditional nonselective NSAIDs do.
Ankylosing spondylitis : A chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. Celecoxib is used to reduce pain and stiffness in this condition.
