Cestoda

Cestoda is a class of parasitic flatworms called tapeworms. Adults typically live in vertebrate digestive tracts and absorb nutrients through their body surface.

Scolex: The attachment structure at a tapeworm’s anterior end, often bearing suckers or hooks. It anchors adult cestodes to the host’s intestinal lining.
Platyhelminthes: A phylum of bilaterally symmetrical, soft-bodied invertebrates commonly called flatworms. Cestoda is one of the major parasitic groups within this phylum.
Taeniasis: An intestinal infection caused by adult Taenia tapeworms. It is the characteristic intestinal disease caused by adult pork or beef tapeworms.
Taenia solium: A pork tapeworm whose adult stage infects the human intestine and whose larvae can infect human tissues. Its eggs can cause cysticercosis, including dangerous infection of the brain.
Proglottid: A reproductive body segment of a tapeworm, containing male and female reproductive organs. Repeated proglottids form the strobila and produce eggs as they mature.
Neodermata: A clade of parasitic flatworms characterized by a syncytial outer covering called a neodermis. Cestodes belong to this parasitic flatworm lineage.
Cysticercosis: Tissue infection by the larval stage of Taenia solium. Swallowed T. solium eggs can produce larvae that invade human tissues.
Taenia saginata: A beef tapeworm whose adult stage lives in the human intestine. Its life cycle links human infection to larval development in cattle.
Strobila: The chain of reproductive segments behind a tapeworm’s scolex. Its successive proglottids mature and release eggs into the host’s environment.
Endoparasite: A parasite that lives inside the body of its host. Adult cestodes inhabit internal organs, most often the digestive tract.
