Chair conformation

A nonplanar arrangement of a six-membered ring, especially cyclohexane, with alternating atoms raised and lowered. It minimizes angle and torsional strain while allowing nearly staggered bonds.

Cyclohexane ring inversion: The interconversion of cyclohexane chair conformations through higher-energy shapes, exchanging axial and equatorial positions. Ring inversion connects two chairs without breaking bonds, swapping every axial and equatorial substituent.
Cyclohexane: A saturated six-carbon ring hydrocarbon with molecular formula C₆H₁₂. Its six-membered ring is the standard molecule used to describe chair conformations.
Boat conformation: A cyclohexane conformation with both ends of the ring raised on the same side, resembling a boat. The boat has eclipsing interactions and close flagpole hydrogens absent from the chair.
A-value: A measure of a substituent’s preference for an equatorial rather than axial position on a cyclohexane ring. A-values quantify the energetic penalty of placing a group axial in a chair.
Axial and equatorial bonds: The two orientations of substituent bonds on a cyclohexane chair: roughly perpendicular or roughly around the ring’s perimeter. Their orientations show how chair geometry positions ring hydrogens and substituents.
Conformation: A spatial arrangement of a molecule that can change through rotations or other motions without breaking covalent bonds. A chair is one conformation of a ring, not a different connectivity or stereoisomer.
Twist-boat conformation: A twisted form of the cyclohexane boat that reduces some of its eclipsing and steric interactions. It is more stable than the boat but less stable than the chair.
Conformational isomerism: The existence of distinct molecular conformations that interconvert without breaking covalent bonds. Interconverting chair forms are conformational isomers with different substituent orientations.
Torsional strain: The energetic cost of eclipsed or partly eclipsed bonds, arising from unfavorable interactions between bonding electron pairs. Staggered bonds in the chair keep torsional strain low.
Tetrahedral molecular geometry: A molecular geometry in which a central atom has four bonds directed toward the corners of a tetrahedron. The chair accommodates the preferred tetrahedral geometry at each carbon atom.
