Cycloalkane

A saturated hydrocarbon whose carbon atoms form one or more rings connected by single bonds. Its ring structure distinguishes it from acyclic alkanes.

Alkane: A saturated hydrocarbon containing only carbon–carbon and carbon–hydrogen single bonds. Cycloalkanes are the ring-containing members of this broader hydrocarbon family.
Ring strain: The increase in molecular energy caused by geometric constraints in a ring. It explains why small cycloalkanes are less stable than larger, flexible rings.
Cyclohexane: A six-carbon cycloalkane used widely as an industrial solvent and chemical feedstock. Its oxidation supplies intermediates used in nylon manufacture.
Alkene: An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. A monocyclic cycloalkane can share an alkene's formula but has a ring instead of a double bond.
Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed when atoms share electron pairs. Single covalent bonds connect the carbon atoms in cycloalkane rings.
Baeyer strain theory: A theory that relates cycloalkane stability to deviations of ring bond angles from tetrahedral geometry. It first framed ring stability through angle strain, though it missed conformational flexibility.
Naphthene: A petroleum-industry name for saturated cyclic hydrocarbons, especially cycloalkanes in crude oil. Naphthenes contribute to the composition and properties of petroleum fractions.
Acyclic compound: A compound whose molecular structure contains no rings. Acyclic alkanes lack the ring closure that defines cycloalkanes.
Molecular formula: A notation that specifies the number of each type of atom in a molecule. For monocyclic cycloalkanes, ring closure gives the formula CₙH₂ₙ.
Cyclopropane: A three-carbon cycloalkane with unusually strained bonds and distinctive reactivity. Its 60-degree ring angles make it the clearest case of severe angle strain.
