Cyclopentane

Cyclopentane is a saturated cyclic hydrocarbon with five carbon atoms and formula C₅H₁₀. It is a volatile, flammable liquid used as a solvent and as a blowing agent for foam.

Cycloalkane: A saturated hydrocarbon whose carbon atoms form one or more rings. Cyclopentane is the five-carbon member of this hydrocarbon family.
Blowing agent: A substance that creates gas bubbles in a material during foaming or expansion. Cyclopentane vapor forms the cells in many rigid polyurethane foams.
Pentane: A straight-chain alkane with five carbon atoms and molecular formula C₅H₁₂. Pentane has the same carbon count but is open-chain and contains two more hydrogen atoms.
Flammability: The ability of a substance to ignite and sustain combustion under specified conditions. Cyclopentane’s low flash point requires controls against sparks and open flames.
Conformational isomerism: The existence of distinct molecular shapes produced by rotation around single bonds without breaking them. Cyclopentane adopts puckered shapes rather than a flat, strained ring.
Polyurethane: A family of polymers containing urethane linkages, used in foams, coatings, adhesives, and elastomers. Cyclopentane is commonly used to foam polyurethane insulation.
Cyclobutane: A saturated four-carbon ring hydrocarbon with molecular formula C₄H₈. Its smaller ring has greater angle strain than cyclopentane’s five-membered ring.
Flash point: The lowest temperature at which a liquid produces enough vapor to ignite briefly near its surface. Cyclopentane’s low flash point makes storage and processing precautions essential.
Pseudorotation: A continuous molecular motion that interconverts conformations through a sequence of small geometric changes. It describes how cyclopentane rapidly shifts among envelope and twist conformations.
Rigid polyurethane foam: A stiff, closed-cell polymer foam used chiefly for thermal insulation. Cyclopentane expands the foam and remains within its insulating cells.
