Chamber (firearms)

The part of a firearm that holds a cartridge in position for firing. It supports the cartridge case and contains expanding gases when the firearm is discharged.

Cartridge: A complete unit of ammunition containing a case, primer, propellant, and projectile. The chamber receives this assembled unit and supports its case during firing.
Firearm: A portable weapon that launches a projectile through a barrel using expanding gas or another propulsive force. The chamber is one component within this broader device.
Chambering (firearms): The process of moving a cartridge into a firearm’s chamber, or the specification of a firearm for a particular cartridge. The term describes both loading a round and matching a firearm to its cartridge.
Chamber throat: The transition between a firearm’s chamber and the rifled portion of its bore. This short section lies immediately ahead of the chamber and guides the projectile toward the rifling.
Breech: The rear portion of a firearm’s barrel or action, where ammunition is loaded and firing begins. The breech closes behind the chamber to contain firing pressure.
Barrel (firearms): The tube through which a firearm’s projectile travels after ignition. The chamber is located at the rear of the barrel in many firearms.
Chamber reaming: The machining operation that cuts a firearm chamber to specified dimensions with a chamber reamer. Reaming establishes the chamber dimensions that govern cartridge fit.
Bore (firearms): The interior passage of a firearm barrel through which a projectile travels. The bore carries the projectile after it leaves the chamber.
Headspace: The distance between a firearm’s breech face and the surface that stops a cartridge from moving forward. Correct headspace lets the chamber position a cartridge safely and consistently.
Rimmed cartridge: A cartridge whose case has a projecting rim that provides a surface for extraction and positioning. Its rim commonly stops forward movement at the chamber’s rear end.
